Modelling portfolio shoot

A couple of months ago budding model Jemma approached me to ask if I would take some pictures for her portfolio. We decided to go for the challenge of taking these in Woking Town Centre at the end of a college day for Jemma. Fortunately we were able to catch a bright sun a little while before it set and had good fun getting a variety of moody shots. Check out the rest of the shoot in the customer galleries section.

Romantic Engagement Session in the Surrey Snow!

I've been in my absolute element this week not only having fun with the girls making snowmen and sledging but out and about with the camera bag too! The local stretch of canal is now completely frozen over and makes a great backdrop for wintery outdoor portraits.

The loveliest bride-to-be you can imagine, Trudi and Paul, her England Rugby scrum half fiance had an impromptu engagement session in the snow this week. We had the idea way back in the summer that we'd hold off doing the pre-wedding practice session in the feint hope we might get some dreamy snow pictures over the winter. And the dream came true! See the truly romantic results in the clip above. Paul and Trudi are SUCH a pleasure to photograph - so clearly in love and such a fab, fun couple! (I really can't wait for their wedding!)

The place we took these pictures is very close to my base in Woking and I would happily take any intrepid couples or families down there and 'make hay while the sun shines' - or rather take pictures while the snow lasts! Infact I've been there again this afternoon for a family of nine having a birthday photo session (a gift from my friend Kevin's wife for his 30th birthday).

5 Tips for a Relaxed Photo Session

It's been encouraging to hear from so many of my clients that they value the friendly and tailored service that I endeavour to provide. I often hear that they, and especially their children, appreciate my preferred approach to taking pictures using natural light in their home (or at a favourite location) rather than the artificially lit and unfamiliar environment of a photographic studio.

Here's 5 tips for your making photo sessions even more natural and relaxed.

• Look for where it's nice and bright in your home, as natural light makes for great photos.
• Organise clothing and tidy up the night before your photo session, so you and your family are not frantically ironing or hoovering moments before your shoot!
• Avoid clothing with bright stripes, logos and very bright colours as these will distract.
• Have a change of clothing available to give variety to your photos if you'd like.
• Have favourite toys and treats on hand to keep kids happy.

Caring for Your Photographs

We came across some helpful tips from the National Trust's photographic materials adviser that we thought would be useful guidance for our customers:

• Try to avoid touching the front of photographs because the natural oils in your fingertips can leave permanent marks. Hold a photograph by its edges instead.
• Have copies of your most previous photographs made for display and store the originals in a cool, dark place or in an acid-free box.
• Avoid placing photographs in direct light, near heat sources or potentially dusty areas such as working fireplaces.
• Use glazed frames to display prints rather than keeping them out loose.
• Avoid using 'magnetic' albums with sticky pages intended to hold prints in place. The adhesives are a source of pollutants that will cause damage. Choose good quality albumns with acid-free paper pages.
• To attach photographs, use photo-corners that are adhered only to the album page rather than those which are attached diretly to the photographs.
• Remember to label photographs on their enclosures or on album pages so that future generations are able to identify and enjoy them!

1. Firstly, another way to help ensure the longevity of your prints, is to use top quality materials in the first place. All our photographic prints are printed on Fuji Crystal Archive paper which provides:

• "Unrivalled image permanence.
• Brilliant colour reproduction with accurate colour rendition and smooth tones.
• Brilliant highlights and outstanding whites.
• Enhanced sharpness with excellent definition.
• Processing stability."

2. Also, we certainly agree with keeping two versions of your images - e.g. digital and physical, or two copies of the physical prints, for safekeeping. Ideally these should not be stored in the same location in case of fire. We practice what we preach: once we've taken your pictures, we immediately make two digital backups. Once we've processed them and uploaded them to our website, we also automatically make three further backups on our archive networked storage devices.

3. We offer a beautiful range of frames which are only available to professional photographers. These include the option to use conservation glass. This is identical in appearance to standard glass, but has a UV coating on one side of the glass, which prevents harmful UV rays from passing through to the artwork. As a result, the artwork is preserved from light damage for longer. Normal glass will reflect about 50% of UV light, whereas Conservation Glass reflects 98%.

Baby Surrey Magazine - Bronwyn in the Cornfield

After a period of not taking quite so many beautiful babies in order to concentrate on blushing brides over the summer I am back with the team at Baby Surrey magazine providing imagery for some of their features. Deciding on the image to use for our ad is always hard but we felt it was our 2nd daughter, Bronwyn's turn to have a picture this time as Imogen has been our little mascot more than once before!

I was tickled pink to hear that a couple of my photos appeared in Hello! magazine this week! One of the loveliest brides of this summer, Sarah Wood sent in some photos from her and Ollie's wedding and they've been published in their real life weddings section (page 134).

Miracle Mum Michelle featured in Evening Standard

The Evening Standard last week covered the wonderful story of Michelle's discovery that she had cancer while pregnant with twins. She was advised to terminate the pregnancy to save her own life but she refused, the twins are both healthy and Michelle is rid of cancer (hopefully for good!) I do love hearing miracle stories like this!
The story was accompanied by a picture I took of the family during an 'at home' portrait session last year - so I now can say 'as featured in the Evening Standard' and that I'm a press photographer??

Day off...??

Took a day trip with Kevin this weekend to Brighton (without the kids and pushchair and nappies and all....!!) .. a little break from running the business in every spare moment at the weekends. Couldn't bring ourselves to 'travel light' though by leaving the camera behind (even for one day!) Kevin especially loved taking the speedboats while I sheltered from the rain on the pier and we practiced taking urban portraits. We had great fun - and realised we both love photography SO much we just can't switch off from it. Maybe what we really need is three weeks in the Maldives rather than a day in Brighton!!!

Corporate Lighting

I recently spent an unusual evening photographing lighting installations. Sarah had received a commission from a friend of ours who needs images of his electrical work for his portfolio and website. It was very different to the kind of photography we usually do, with lots of very long exposures (up to 30 seconds!) as it was 1am by the time I left. It was great to have a challenge. Off to Spain for Suzi and Dean's nuptials!

I am getting excited as later in the Summer Suzi and Dean have their three day wedding celebration with friends and family in Spain, and I'm their photographer!

We had Suzi and Dean's Engagement shoot way back in July along with a quirky session for a truly original invitation design dreamed up by Suzi. We had fun in the evening sun in their back garden and took some pictures that are firm favourites of mine! I know there's going to be so many beautiful pictures I'd better stock up on more flashcards to make sure I don't run out of memory as I am bound to get carried away!!

Ed and Pip - Wedding warm-up session

It really looked like we were going to get rained off on the Bank Holiday Monday morning we'd earmarked for our 'wedding warm-up portrait session' but we were blessed with the most fantastic weather (bright but cloudy). And although we had a plan to wander round the nearby Goldsworth Park Lake we didn't get further than the back garden! Pip and Ed are a terrific couple, so at ease with each other and naturally fab for the camera! Without masses of space to move around the photographs turned out to have a gentle and intimate feel to them. A result I am very pleased with!

I am so thrilled that it'll be me taking the photos of Ed and Pip's Woking wedding in September. It's going to be a great day....

Sarah and Ollie's Wedding at Wotton House

We had the fun task of photographing Sarah and Ollie's purple extravaganza of a wedding a few weeks ago at Wotton House in Dorking.




These two were so clearly besotted with each other and that shone from their wedding throughout....a highlight for us was their releasing two 'love birds' from the temple in the house grounds... (this is one of Sarah and Ollie's favourite images)

I especially enjoyed the challenge of trying to capture the care that Sarah had so obviously taken planning every last ornate detail of her day in the various regal hues - and not forgetting the elaborate floral displays and bouquets by Lily and Myrtle.

If you go down to the woods today...

We race to the Bluebell Woods when we know the flowers are out. Apart from the lovely little (scented) walk that delights my two little princesses (they were, this time, convinced it's Hundred Acre Wood and that Owl and Kanga might be found lurking behind a tree) its just too photogenic for words. We took our great friends from next door and the girls' cousins too... A fab afternoon out!

Out and about in Woking

The Coign Church are in the process of updating their website, so Kevin went out and about in Woking to take some general "townscape shots" for them. Really a bit late in the day for these kind of shots, and a little bright, but we were on a tight schedule, and the low sun provided some interesting effects.

Surrey Vinvolved (YMCA)

A volunteering initiative, incorporated with the ‘Superhero Week’ Promotion for Surrey vinvolved, (Volunteering for the 21st Century: we do it because we want to & because we can!) took place this half term week ending on 21 February 09 with A Superhero Fashion Show
in the Peacocks Shopping Centre. Young people designed, created & modelled outfits with a difference! Materials were provided by one of our favourite charities Woking Hospice.


Covering this meant that Kevin was on double duty in Woking with the kit bag on Saturday as he had some Town Centre photographs to take for website images.. more blogging later.....

Pre-wedding shoot with Sarah and Ollie

A great relaxed morning was had outside Sarah's parents' lovely place beside the Thames.... we missed the snow (sadly??) but I do love all the soft greys and the silvery winterness. Its really a pleasure to
photograph a couple who are so up for having fun. Its a countdown now to their wedding in Dorking at Eastertime... Can't wait - they have an especially challenging/exciting shot or two for us to get - all will be revealed!

Ad Campaign for Electus part 2

We've finished our run of ads for Public Affairs and Public Relations recruitement company, Electus. (see here for our first two). Electus have had great feedback on the ads so far and we've had fun learning how to toast e's on to bread, not getting chucked out of town centre coffee shops, and eating a LOT of eggs. :)

Google Adwords

Thanks to a promotion from Google, we're trying out Google's 'AdWords system. It will be interesting to see how much the traffic to our website and 24/7 personal phone answering service increases.

New Baby Surrey Ad

As readers of this blog will know, Sarah is official photographer for 'Baby Surrey' magazine. We've given our ad a Spring theme and added more images. Let us know what you think...

Now accepting credit cards!

Wow, it's all happening here! As any growing business knows, success = paperwork. As the geek boy in this outfit, I've been trying to get all our processes tickedy boo so that Sarah can spend more time on what she does best - taking great pictures (and of course feeding us all)! To that end, we've just set up the processes needed to accept secure credit or debit card payments through our online ordering system. This is really important as recent customer feedback indicates many people don't even have a cheque book!

Also the professional photo development lab we use now automagically integrates with our website too. What does all this nonsense mean.... it means you can get your hands on your photos much more quickly and easily without waiting for the Aires household to process the paperwork! That's a win-win :) Hurrah!

It was such a privilege to be part of this great couple's wedding day last week. Some especially emotional moments- its best not to cry when you're holding the camera! Rain as forecast meant we didn't get to jog around the lake like we did for the practice session but it stopped so we could make the most of the beautiful setting sunlight!

Having fun with collages

A couple of customers mentioned that they'd quite like a picture of reportage-y style photos in the collage style I used to like to plaster my breezeblock walls with at college. Had a few minutes fun trying out some tools that compile these instantly and reasonably well too!

We are delighted to have be asked to assist with a winter campaign of bespoke photographic advertisements for Electus, the experts in public affairs and public relations jobs and recruitment.

Electus' hallmark is their straightforward, honest and discrete approach - and this was what they wanted to convey in their new ads for the Public Affairs News. A breakfast theme was selected for the images- with no nonsense copy giving an idea of 'new start', freshness and 'making it happen'.

Here are the first two ads - we hope they'll stand out from the crowd and attract clients and candidates who want a fresh approach in assisting them with their recruitment needs.

Another lovely event!

I photographed the family and friends' get-together after a gorgeous little girl's Christening in Addlestone last weekend. The Mummy's lovely girlfriends all clubbed together to surprise her with a special photographic record of the day for her and her family. It was a lovely occasion - here are the girls enjoying the celebrations afterwards.

Website update

Well, finally the website is pretty much done! The new design from our print ad replaces the previous "creampuff" font, so apart from a little tweaking here and there at the margins, we are ready for August 15th when the Autumn edition of Baby Surrey magazine comes out.

Our next major project is a series of Ads for a London-based specialist recruiting firm, as well as quoting for some upcoming weddings.

We have been working hard to get the website ready for our print ad to go into the Autumn edition of Baby Surrey magazine. We're getting there... this blog is now better integrated into the site and our pricing and products set have been simplified. Also, we are now offering the opportunity to have your photos pre-loaded on an Apple iPod Touch!

We have also obtained an 0800 number to make it easier for people to contact us. We had fun trying to choose a good one and settled on 0800 1950 251, as it sounds like 1950 to 51 which is at least slightly memorable (those REALLY memorable ones cost a fortune!).

As the online Social Networking website Facebook is now so ubiquitous, we thought we'd set up a Sarah Aires Photography page on there. Why not take a look and become a "fan" of ours.

Anna and Simon's wedding

We photographed a lovely wedding in St Alban's Shendish Manor last weekend. The really gorgeous young couple, Anna and Simon had in most parts a traditionally styled white wedding but they added some cheeky red additions like Anna's fab red satin stilettos.

It was a privilege to be part of Anna and Simon's day - I especially enjoyed the sincere live worship which formed part of their moving church wedding ceremony. Simon is leading the worship at a big Christian youth festival 'newday' http://www.newday.xtn.org/
next week so I'm sure he'll be flat out as soon as he gets back from honeymoon. I do hope they like their pictures!

Beautiful bouncing new babies....

I'm (still) so excited to have my pictures published in the Baby Surrey magazine - here's a look at the little souls who'll be featured with their families in the Autumn edition - out August 14th. Thanks to the fab Mums and Dads for being so good at looking suitably doting for the camera. It really wasn't as if you had to pose was it!?

Print Advert

Yesterday and today I have been working on the print ad for Surrey Baby magazine. This was the driver for the website redesign as we needed to set the design elements in the website in time to match the deadline for the print ad. Am pretty pleased with it. It's pretty bold and again, time will tell whether people like it or not. One things for sure, the people that do like it will be game for a laugh so perhaps thats a good thing. See what you think:

Ferris Bueller's Day Off!

As Sarah mentioned, we've had great fun rebranding ourselves and our patio window is currently post-it noted (minus porridge). The big push was to get our brand/image established, and then design the front page of our site from that. The rest of the site should hopefully follow suit. We really wanted a big friendly image on the homepage and minimal text with no photography speak Then I remembered that famous line from Ferris Bueller's Day Off (one of the best films of all time!), and that was it.

With some great feedback from friends we iterated from blue blast, down to a more subdued version of the page but retaining the major elements, and we are pleased as punch. Time will tell as to whether anyone else agrees :) , but having seen more photographic sites than is strictly healthy over the last few weeks, we were just tired of seeing the same old words and wanted a more design led approach.

This site on 2008 design trends was very useful. As was the Website Design Awards site. We're not done yet, so expect more changes over the next few weeks...

Website revamp - Swinging Imogen

As we are to have a mega ad in the Baby Surrey Magazine we thought a revamp of the website was in order. We had an uberbrainstorming session in the kitchen with post it notes flying in and out of Bronwyn's porridge! We want to make the site/our brand more like us( - scary!) Fun not cheese. Approachable not geeky photospeaky. Two very, very late nights later and we think the site is greatly improved. We are shattered though and ready to have a holiday from it! Its been great fun though.

Baby Surrey Magazine - pictures to be published!!!

What an amazing and crazy week it has been!
We're so so happy as I have just been signed up by the new glossy and classy Baby Surrey magazine (every Mum I have spoken to seeems to have got their first complimentary copy!) - my main task is to photograph families for their 'Welcome to the World' new babies in Surrey feature and some more features. I AM SO EXCITED! It is just exactly my kinda thing -and how it all happened is quite a miracle! (ask me and I'll tell you). The team at the magazine based in Southampton all seem great. I think this is going to be a great project for me!

Phipps on Horsell Common

Sarah and I popped over to Horsell common to photograph the Phipps family from church. They wanted some big family group shots before Matt went off to America as they'd not had these as planned from a recent wedding. We had a fun morning hiding on the common, with me craning to hold our diffuser high enough to shield faces from dappled light coming through the trees :) Sounds nice in theory, but dappled light can make one look a bit diseased and is distracting, so ideally avoided if possible!

Coign Murder Mystery

Sarah and I had a fun evening for my birthday (May 11th) over trying to discover who the murderer was at the Coign Murder Mystery evening. We were on Phil Moore's table, and as usual his ultra sharp mind was in overdrive. I manage to contribute about 1 coherent comment which actually helped us to win, so I was pleased :)

London Community Gospel Choir

Sarah went to see the London Community Gospel Choir. She took some friends along and was also the official photographer. Looks like she got some great shots and all the better for being in very low light. Was an amazing evening apparently with everyone joining in. I've seen them in the past and they are fantastic.
